| 伊予式蝋花晒法
内子は１９世紀後半から２０世紀の初めにかけて木蝋の日本最大の産地になり、 且つその製品、白蝋（はくろう）の質の高さから世界に輸出されました。 そのきっかけになったのは、１９世紀に芳賀家で考案した手法で、生蝋（きろう）を 天日にさらして、白蝋をつくる方法で、伊予式蝋花晒法（ろうばなさらしほう）と呼ば れています。私は、結構長い間、内子が木蝋で栄えた町だと説明しても、伊予式 蝋花晒法に言及することはありませんでした。 上芳賀邸のチケット売り場の横に敷地に入れる戸口があり、（敷地だけなら無料） そこに当時の道具類が展示されています。あるとき、私は上芳賀邸のスタッフの方 からその道具がどう使われていたのか、説明を受けました。それが、蝋花晒法の 説明そのものだったのです。見えるものを実際に見ながら説明を受けると分かりや すい。逆にいえば、見えるものを前にして説明すると説明しやすい。 今ここに写真がないのですが（すぐに載せたい）、それからは、蝋花晒法の説明が 私の得意技となりました。 ポイントは以下の通り、 In order to get white wax, first of all, raw wax is heated in this pot. With the temperature of 50-60°Celsius it is melted.Then it is scooped into this big tub.. And lye or alkaline solution is added.Usually caustic soda was used, and in the ages caustic soda was not available, ash was used. And it is left as it is for 2 or 3 hours. So impurities settle down at the bottom of the tubl and wax itself is bleached.After that, melted wax is poured into this smaller tub full of cold water, with human hand churning the water.Then flower-like crystal substance is created.Then it is scooped with this tool, and the water is drained with this device. And it is spread onto this shallow wooden box made of cedar..At the four corners are small holes for residual water being drained. And the box is under the sunlight for many days.The sunlight will promote bleaching of wax.In Uchiko this process was repeated two or three times. Like this, the the wax was under the sunlight for a month in total in summer,and for two months in winter.This method was worked out in the late 19th century by a man in the Honhaga family.And it brough a huge amount of money to this town. Are there any questions? ここで面白いのは、灰汁（あく）を英語では lye ライ と言います。科学的には アルカリ性水溶液のことで、alkaline solution/ alkalic solution です。 lyeという言葉が出てくるので、ここで、I'm not telling a lie 、と言って笑いをとることも できます。なお、このlyeは徳島の藍の説明でも、使うことがありますから、四国で 活躍するガイドにとっては結構重要な言葉になりそうです。 以下は、その説明に至る前の私の口上です。 First, I'd like to show you in the museum ,then in the grounds, and finally in the house,but before that, I'd like to explain about the most important thing in this house. Please come this way.The reason why Uchiko became the biggest wax production site was the creation of the new method of producing high-quality white wax in the 19th cenrury. A key word is white wax.This is white wax. This is raw wax. Material of Japanese wax is berries of sumac trees.The berries are crushed into this fine powder.And then it is steamed and pressed, and they can get wax, which is raw wax.Raw wax is already usable for some goods like candles.
